I have some in plastic drawer units, some in plastic baskets that sit on shelves, some in stacking bins and some in cutlery trays. Yeah, I have a thread problem. And to add to that problem, after reading your post on Connecting Threads, I immediately went over there and ordered even more! Spooled thread sits in a storage cube on the shelving behind my sewing chair. Each drawer holds a different type of thread weight. I place the spools lying down so I can easily see the color and place the the spools in rows so they stay neat. Each lid is a color family. Like many others, I also store my thread in a 6-drawer rolling plastic cart, which the label identifies as an "Iris Mini-Chest." Cottons are sorted by color, using small boxes to organize color groups. (I use the both the box AND its lid that my checks come in.) There's a separate drawer for all rayon threads, and another for embroidery-wt., bobbin threads, metallics, and other misc. types. The system works well for me, even though some color groups are overflowing! My decorative threads are in a plastic see-thru box, but I agree it is not ideal.
