It's as though we threw them this bone of the casinos to make up for the fact that we had taken their land and forced them to live on reservations. It's not wonder alcoholism is so prevalent among Native Americans.

My old school FSU still has the Seminole as its mascot. It is demeaning.Barbarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18356998698106275372noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16634800.post-2227663859604550242009-09-19T05:25:28.339-07:002009-09-19T05:25:28.339-07:00I love stopping at the trading post and do wheneve...I love stopping at the trading post and do whenever I'm in that side of the state. I recently purchased medicine bags shaped like animals (horse and bison)for my grandnieces; each was strung from a leather strip so it could be worn like a necklace. I was given instructions on their use (to bless a person or place). The woman who helped me also told me that beading is becoming a lost art on the "res" (her word)since young girls don't want to bother with such stuff. Sad. The store is also an excellent place to shop for Minnetonka shoes: moccasins, sandals and boots. Thanks, Terry, for sharing.Susan Lowman-Thomasnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16634800.post-45853452911039625712009-09-18T22:40:45.450-07:002009-09-18T22:40:45.450-07:00Of course this makes me think of The Man Who Fell ...Of course this makes me think of The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon, and Shed.

I love the idea of moccasins, still, but now I'm trying to picture them with orthotics, and failing. I always wore mine until they fell apart so I'm envious that you still have a pair. I'm still mad at myself for not valuing them as much as I should have--they were so inexpensive!
I, too, had the light ones. The dark ones got that way from smoking the hide--I didn't like smelling like a barbecue, even though the color was really beautiful. I'd love to have another pair some day.Becknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16634800.post-84166560888690043582009-09-18T10:23:40.311-07:002009-09-18T10:23:40.311-07:00A whole lot of the kids who lived on the reservati...A whole lot of the kids who lived on the reservation came to Blackfoot to school. Many also went to a school in Oklahoma (I think). I remember vividly going to my grandmother's or other friends and relatives an driving through Fort Hall. Even after the freeway was completed we mostly took the old highway. What a dusty old town that was.

We used to get beading supplies and mocassins at a shop called Blackfoot Curios. It sold all manner of items from the reservation. We also would order special made mocassins there.

Just before I looked at this post I was reading a FB entry from a high school friend whose father owned the Fort Hall Trading post. She had just posted photos of some old friends. Another one of those strange coincidences.Carlahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00140738523399836125noreply@blogger.com
