My abstract concept had to do with a vast night sky and a shades of deep blue, and superimposed by light and color (perhaps this part was influenced by our trip to Las Vegas).
And (definitely influenced by that desert sky) I wanted to add a suggestion of the immensity of galaxies and planets and nights filled with stars. But starting to add a bunch of dots of paint was pretty scary. I could easily ruin the whole deal. So I loaded the photo above into my Sketch Club drawing app and tried out some digital paint on it. I thought the dots might need to be only in the upper section, like this.
Here is the final result, using real paint.
I love the sculptural quality.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like one of your small beaded pieces. I'm having trouble reconciling it with the 24 x 60 dimension you spoke of. Is this piece that big?
Terry - Very cool! Both the piece and your use of the drawing app! Why are you beginning to hate 24"x60"? Thanks for your blog - Marcia
ReplyDeleteSuch an excellent use of your digital equipment! And I love the result!
ReplyDeleteTo my eye, this is a show stopper.
ReplyDeleteBe careful figuring out a piece so completely before you begin- I used to glue tiny pieces of fabric onto graph paper to 'see' a piece before sewing the bigger hunks of cloth, but found that once I did it with tiny squares and Elmer's I was done and had lost all interest in sewing it! BTW, I love this 'Las Vegas' piece!
ReplyDeleteI really like this- it feels recognizably like your work and yet new and interesting. I love the dark blues in the background- the whole thing is a lovely palette.
ReplyDeleteMy initial feeling was to go for the whiter dots from the digital image but the softer paint dots allow the "city lights" to shine. It's just magical.
ReplyDeleteSally
It reminds me of your Campfire - a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteGreat design, Terry! Isn't it amazing how useful that Sketchclub app is? I used it to figure out how to paint a new mask before I actually painted it.
ReplyDeleteA really good use of technology. I really like the finished result.
ReplyDeleteI have used the digital drawing as a tool to try changes to a painting and changes to wall color -just to get an idea. Your use of it here really worked out well. The piece is graphic and yet organic with a nice balance. Very good.
ReplyDeleteThis is my second visit to look at this piece. I do like it, but my reaction is still that the digital version with much brighter white "stars" is more compelling. Perhaps you could add brighter white dots in some areas as our night sky is not filled with even color, but has some much brighter stars. Marken
ReplyDeleteI haven't been ignoring your digital drawing posts, just watching from a distant as I never imagined myself using my iPad in this way. Now I can. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHello Terry, I tried to leave a post a few days ago that apparently hasn't gone through. After several visits, my initial reaction still holds. My suggestion would be to add brighter color to some of the stars. The stars in our night sky are not all a uniform brightness and I think additional color might add more liveliness to your quilt. I'm looking forward to the completion of your second blue quilt...my favorite color. Marken
ReplyDeleteWow, that looks amazing!!!! love it
