We were newly married and didn't have much at all. Most of our apartment was furnished with stuff I found at a favorite second-hand store and from flea markets and such, in Boise, Idaho where we lived. One Sunday afternoon we went to stroll through an outdoor flea market and I saw this painting and its interesting old frame. I loved it and bought it impulsively. I don't remember what I paid. It couldn't have been much.
It is not a reproduction. It's a watercolor signed, "E. Patton '09". I've never been able to find out who E. Patton was and of course I don't know if the pretty lady in the big hat was real or imagined. She is nearly 100 years old and lovely as ever. It's pretty romantic—not great art, but done with a sure hand and an eye for beauty. And you gotta love that hat.
