Lovely mystery lady

We were newly married and didn't have much at all. Most of our apartment was furnished with stuff I found at a favorite second-hand store and from flea markets and such, in Boise, Idaho where we lived. One Sunday afternoon we went to stroll through an outdoor flea market and I saw this painting and its interesting old frame. I loved it and bought it impulsively. I don't remember what I paid. It couldn't have been much.

It is not a reproduction. It's a watercolor signed, "E. Patton '09". I've never been able to find out who E. Patton was and of course I don't know if the pretty lady in the big hat was real or imagined. She is nearly 100 years old and lovely as ever. It's pretty romantic—not great art, but done with a sure hand and an eye for beauty. And you gotta love that hat.

  1. I like buying art based on what I like, and not based on what I am supposed to like and what "experts" call "great art". It is a lovely lady.

  2. I don't remember ever seeing this lovely lady. Did you have her in your apartment with stairway to nowhere or the White Savage? The colors are what draw me in and then I seeing the rouged cheeks. I personally love the the piece.

  4. It's great--sort of a Charles Dana Gibson look. I think the clothes, furniture, everything of that period is terrific.
