Good Movie

This afternoon we went to see "Sketches of Frank Gehry" at a little old theater in NW Portland (Cinema 21). It is not the kind of movie you are likely to see at the multiplex, but oh, such a worthwhile afternoon if you can find it playing anywhere near you. It is a documentaray about the acclaimed, but controversial architect, Frank Gehry, and is a fascinating insight into the creative process. The scenes where he and a colleague were designing a building by cutting and taping pieces of paper were so wonderful that I really think I must own this movie so I can see it again and again. You can read more here and even see a little cut from the movie.

Didn't Frank Gehry design the Experience Music Project building in Seattle? It's a fascinating building--the mind that came up with it must be fascinating, as well! I'm afraid **sigh** that I will no doubt have to go to the big city to see this movie--our little community doesn't go much for any of that "artsy" stuff.

  2. Yes, Frank Gehry designed the Experience Music Project in Seattle, the only Frank Gehry building I have actually seen in person. I was a little disappointed that they didn't talk about that building in the film. It was briefly mentioned in a section about criticism and controversy over his buildings. I wonder if it is not among his favorite projects. I know it is controversial in Seattle, but I find it fascinating and surprisingly functional inside.
