One with blue eyes, one with brown

Muriel is visiting for a few days and we've been looking at our Mexico pictures tonight and bemoaning the reality that the trip was great, but now it's just a memory and real life isn't nearly as colorful and relaxing. We had dinner at a Mexican restaurant tonight. It wasn't the same. Oh well.

It is such an interesting country and really does have many faces. There is the Indigenous culture and the Spanish influences and the ancient ruins and the great art and beautiful crafts, the sprawling city and the tiny, charming villages. When I have told people we just got back from Mexico most assume we were at a coastal resort. Honestly, I don't have much interest in those kinds of places, though it would be nice to see some of the Mexican beaches. Really, when I visit a foreign place I want to see the art and the architecture and the culture . . .

and the goofy wooden faces—these two are from the streets of Taxco.

And for relatives of mine—I think I may have discovered the inspiration for our late, great Uncle Eddy's unique hairstyle. Looks familiar, doesn't it?

Those faces are great, but I don't think I could live with one of them staring at me all day (and night)! In a similar vein, on his last visit, my dad and I noticed a spooky resemblence between a stone face carved over a cathedral door and my uncle Steve.

  2. Hi, I have been rather scarce in blogland for a while, but today I decided to catch up and have SO enjoyed your recent posts! I love your reminiscences about the singer job, you write so vividly that i can almost picture the sad lady with the husband falling apart, and the greasy little manager! And as we share exactly the same interests when it comes to travelling, I am loving being guided by you around Mexico, thanks!

But no baby yet-- St Pat's kid for sure. I might have to become a sort-of godmother or some such.

  5. So true, most of my favourite places are not the coastal towns. I loved the time I spent in Oaxaca, San Cristobel, Palenque, Puebla, Cholula, Guanajuato, San Miguel, Toluca, Guadalajara, Patzcuaro, Angangeo, and The Copper Canyon. Taxco brings back great memories - we used to go there once a week. I'm also in the minority because I like Mexico City. Spent many weekends there.

I am enjoying reading about your travels. Your post on the weavers in Teotilan de Valle transported me right back.
