Inside, looking out

This is day 2 of Portland's big snowstorm, which by most standards is really a pretty small snowstorm, but here it is a big event. Gerrie is ready to pack up and head back to California (see yesterday's comments), but I am into it. I am "one" with the snow. It is very peaceful. Which is not to say that I couldn't get pretty tired of it eventually, but for now I am enjoying the beauty and the enforced relaxation and watching the birds at the feeders in the yard. Yesterday I did some design work for a future project and today I may even do some stitching. Ray is refinishing cabinets in the downstairs bathroom and I may lend a hand in there as well.

I am sorry for people who have to go out on the treacherous roads, but I am content to stay put for now. Yesterday the school district my daughter teaches in was the only one in the area that did not announce closures, so she had to drive to the school only to find out they had decided, in the meantime, to close, so she had to drive home again. She is home today. When I was growing up in Idaho snow was a way of life and we just drove through it and school went on as usual. It is rare enough here that the city isn't equipped to keep the streets clear. It is also the case that it usually isn't cold enough here to keep the snow from getting icy and really difficult to negotiate. So we hunker down and enjoy it if we can. We may not see this again for several years.

  1. I'm enjoying it for now; the events on my calendar for last night and tonight have been cancelled, so I'm not thinking of venturing out by car. I'm just hoping we can get to the airport on Saturday morning!

  2. Hi, Terry,

I've been trying to post a comment here on you blog page, but so far I haven't been able. I suppose I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what it is.

  3. OK, it worked that time, so I'll try again. Apparently, it was only a matter of my ID.

In any case, I've been paging around in your blog today and just wanted to say that you do a great job.

I noticed that you got a new camera for Christmas and are making good use of it. I managed to twist Dickie's arm to let me buy an expensive new lens for my Canon SLR the other day. Haven't had much chance to use it yet, but I'm eagerly anticipating that.

I don't envy you the ice and snow up there in the Portland area just now, but I see you're taking it in stride. Enjoy! and keep up the good work.

    Say "hello" to Ray.

  4. You are right about looking out onto the snow. It is so peaceful as long as you do not have to negotiate in the ice. I remember in Idaho going almost everywhere when it snowed. But, in Oregon and Washington it was different. The snow was absolutely beautiful but the ice was something else entirely.

Stay warm. We might have a little snow here this weekend.

Here is the grumpy one again. Notice that I have not taken any pretty snow pictures this time. Cold air agravates my sinuses. The house is drafty and cold. We have a defect in our new furnace and it shuts off in the middle of the night and doesn't come back on until noon. The furnace man keeps standing us up.

I want to go outside and go for a long walk without slipping and sliding and getting a sinus headache. I want to be able to get in my car and go shopping or visit the grands.

This weather encourages lethargy and over eating and drinking. I left this weather in NYS over 30 years ago. I never thought I would have to deal with this again unless it was intentional.

Look what happens to me after 2 days. Just imagine if I had to live in Idaho all the time. OMG!

I hope you are right and this is only a once and in a long while happening. Otherwise, I may have to leave in January and not come back until spring.

I guess I should have blogged this!
