Dorky

So here we are on a Sunday evening. Ray's feet on the left, mine on the right. But what are those big, puffy red things, you ask? Why, those are our new down-filled booties that we bought at IKEA yesterday. They are not what we went for, but when I saw them I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We each had to have a pair.

My feet have been cold for the past 17 years. Portland is far from the coldest place I've ever lived, but there is a damp cold here that grabs you by the feet and is relentless. My feet are colder here when it is 30° F than they were in Idaho at 0°. I have gone to bed with cold feet that kept me awake all night despite the fact that the rest of me was comfortable, too, too many nights. Regular old socks don't do the job. But I am sitting here, typing away, with my feet in those puffy, red mucklucks and they are toasty. I don't care how dumb they look. When your feet are warm life is good.

  1. So, you mean, you will go to bed with these "dorky" things on your feet? (I've just learned a new word here!)
(Have to check if they have them at Ikea here too...)

  2. We need an IKEA here! I need those booties!
I know exactly what you mean about cold feet. The best things I have found, at least for wearing with shoes, are angora socks (mine all have holes now from heavy wear) and heavy polarfleece socks. Even better layered together. I got a pattern at Joann's and make the polar socks, as they are almost impossible to find in the deep south. Our house is up on piers due to the high water table, and the floors get cold on the first floor. It cot cold enough to snow here on Friday night.

  3. No, I won't wear these to bed, but they will make sure that my feet are warm when I get into bed. If I go to bed with warm feet, they stay warm. If I go to bed with cold feet, they seem to stay cold.

  4. My feet are freezing here in Nevada, too -- I use one pair of regular socks with woolies overtop. I think it's because of the concrete pad on which this house is built. It's not so bad at home with the basement. Although I am with you about warm feet in bed -- same kind of metabolism. Jer goes to bed warm and wakes up (at 6 AM) cold; me, I'm the opposite.

But then, I've always been dorky, so double socking is merely an extension of my normal being.

  5. I am loving my new Smart Wool socks. They are even warmer over a pair of cotton socks. I do wear socks to bed when it gets this cold cause if my feet are not warm it is hard to sleep.

when my feets are so cold it keeps me awake I put a bit of hot water in the bottom of the bathtub and a couple of minutes sitting on the edge with feet in hot water makes them warm enough to go to sleep.

  9. This is one of the reasons I moved from NJ to AZ. I was cold to the bone mid November through the end of April. My feet are always cold and I have the same wedding vows as you do!
    Enjoy your warm feet.
