She Made Her Mark—progress

I had only one guess as to the identity of my mystery girl for the "She Made Her Mark" piece when I posted a fragment last week. I hope you can tell from this photo that it is Anne Frank.

I am struggling a bit. Now that I have the background pieces sewn down (the figure has not yet been sewn on) I feel like it needs more to achieve that collage-y background look I was going for, but I am a little bit at a loss. Perhaps more of the diary pages. Maybe some old family photos. I don't know what kind of copyright issues I am flirting with here.

When I went up to Tacoma with Gerrie and June I said I was thinking of trying to make a piece for this exhibit and asked for suggestions of women who could be the subject. One of them mentioned Anne Frank and I knew almost immediately that was who it would be. Her diary made such an impression on me when I read it as a young girl.

It's immediately recognizable as Anne Frank! You have lovely collage elements, so maybe what you need to pull it together is just some solid texture, rather than more identifiable stuff. How about a piece of dyed cheesecloth since it's sheer, or a bit of old frayed linen or other "historic" textile that could remind one of something the families had in the hide-out.

  2. I like the idea of the old linens! Some sort of relic from inside the attic. The detail of your faces never ceases to amaze me.

  3. There is no doubt that it is Anne Frank. I too like the idea of bit of cloth or relic from the attic.

  4. My first glance said that this was Anne Frank. For some reason I keep thinking that there was a small table mentioned in the book that might fit somewhere in your background.

  5. I knew at a glance that it was Anne Frank. My mother gave me her diary to read when I was ten and it had a huge impact on me. Your quilt is superb (as always). I like the house. It has an anchoring sort of affect.

ps was pleased to read your lovely post about Kathleen - Your friendship with her was reason enough to wear the veil!
