Seven years ago tonight I sat at my computer, wondered how you set up a blog and followed some links down a rabbit hole. I came out the other end as the new owner of a blog called And Sew it Goes, which I have to explain is a name arrived at through desperation. Every other name that popped into my head had been taken, including my own name. I remembered that in the early days of the internet when I joined my first quilting listserve I used to add that line to my posts. The internet seemed so anonymous and I was having trouble keeping people straight on the list. The tagline seemed like it might be something memorable to distinguish me from the faceless multitude. I now regret using the cute "sew" in the line. "And so it goes..." says better what I intended, but of course that was the line associated with
Linda Ellerbee the wonderful journalist. Also a heartbreaking Billy Joel song and a refrain in the
Kurt Vonnegut book, Slaughterhouse Five. But there it is. And now, seven years later, I am still And Sew it Goes.
I had no idea what this blog would become for me. It is, first and foremost, a journal of my past seven years. The only journal I have ever kept. It didn't occur to me that it would engender a community of friends and open up opportunities never anticipated. I can't imagine coming to a place where I have nothing more to write about. I know it is probably the height of self-absorption in some peoples' eyes, but it is something that I now love so much that it doesn't matter to me.
They say that life happens in seven year cycles. They say that every one of our cells is replaced in the space of seven years. So, the new me wonders what the next seven years will bring. You know where you can find me.
And so it goes...
Congratulations on 7 years! I found your blog off of the list and loved it from the beginning. Your artwork speaks from the heart and your generous explaination of what works/doesn't work is so refreshing. Thank you for 7 years of sharing and inspiring. I am glad you fell down that rabbit hole. As to the name, it is what attracted me to the blog in the first place. My Dutch husband uses the phrase "and so to bed" which is from the books of a Dutch author that was a favorite of his family. Here's to 7 more years!
ReplyDeleteI am o glad that you blogged so I got to know you and your art online and " in the real".
ReplyDeleteI'm at eight years of doing this now, so congratulations to us BOTH for keeping up a steady stream of online journal pages! I'm now finding that going back to the early posts is painful- I really only want to see the posts from 2020 or so! (Or 'sew'?) One of the real perks of blogs is getting to know 'unmet friends' from all over the world. I know that there would be a cup of coffee and a great laugh or two waiting when I stop by someday! Sew, good going to you! You do a wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me of this performance. We saw Billy Joel in Hartford close to the time we were first married. When we were first seated I was disappointed our seats were on bleachers seat up behind him on the stage..and then the piano turned around and we had the most intimate performance of this and other wonderful songs.
ReplyDeleteand btw...I think I have been reading your blog all these many years..never miss a post because you always have something delightful to contribute.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blogiversary! It's mine too. Also 7 years. We're blog twins! :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy blogaversary Terry. I just found you through Deborah's link - and I will be visitting again! Happy day to you, sus
ReplyDeleteHi Terry--I just dropped in to wish you a happy blog birthday yesterday, and a prosperous next cycle of seven...Linda Ellerbee, Kurt Vonnegut and Billy Joel are all favorites of mine, and I'm so glad Deb pointed me in your direction. I will say I wish the print were larger (my old eyes), and I keep meaning to beg Deb to darken and enlarge hers...I hesitate to make the request hoping it doesn't offend.
ReplyDeletethat's quite a stretch, keep going!
ReplyDeleteI love your name and always enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteWe're along with you for the next seven.
ReplyDeleteIf I only have time to read a couple blogs yours is always the first. I started in 2004 and ran across "And Sew It Goes" soon after you started. My vow was to blog every day, but I have missed some days and have needed a couple "blog breaks". It is now such an integral part of my life that I know I can never stop - I'll be blogging on my death bed! And I hope you will be there to read it!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you plan to keep on blogging. You're one of my favorites; thoughtful, creative, interesting, generous, thoroughly excellent!!!! Congrats to you.
