The object #2

This object is not only quite a beautiful thing, but it is a mystery, and I love a mystery! What would you call this? A crystal paperweight? A cut glass paperweight? It measures about 3.5" in diameter, is about 2.5" tall and is quite heavy. It appears to be hand-cut. The facets are not perfect and vary a bit in shape and size. I have searched the internet and can't find anything quite like it.

The mystery, you ask? The mystery is how and when and why it ended up in the bottom of the creek that runs through our property. That is where Ray found it last summer, along with a tall, square bottle. And no, this is not part of the bottle. I'm quite sure of that. It was very dirty and I cleaned it up as best I could. You can probably see that it still has a little creek residue firmly attached in spots. The bottle is much worse. How long was it in the creek? Why was it in the creek? I doubt we will ever know answers to those questions. I can't believe it was tossed away as something worthless or no longer wanted. To me it is magical and feels like such a gift.

  1. A gift, indeed! Such things are magic to me, too. I found a crystal ball which obviously had been part of a chandelier, but the eye to hang it from was broken. It was a magic gift to me, too. I found it at the age of 7. I don't have it any more (another story).

  3. Could it be a window prism?
You sit it on a windowsill and when it catches the sunlight, you get rainbows all over the room.

  4. I live in an old building in Chicago - many of my door knobs look like that.

Does it have a square cut into the bottom where the rod would have been?

  5. I would have said that it's a crystal paperweight, but I love the idea of it specifically belonging on a windowsill. I bet it casts tons of rainbows!

  6. Doorknob is my guess too. I do not think they went into the glass with the rod..I think that was in all in the brass surrounding the knob.

  7. I am betting on paperweight. I have a crystal paperweight that someone gave me as a graduation gift. It is heart shaped and cut like this one. It was made by Waterford! It is also quite heavy. What a wonderful find at the bottom of a creek! How special. A fun mystery.

Definitely a crystal hand-cut paperweight. Picked up a pair recently at a thrift store. One is cut just like this one. Still haven't figured out a manufacturer...
